📋 Recap
The CAAIN 2026 Open Competition full project proposal is in its final pass for submission against tonight's October 9, 11:59pm deadline — a $500,000 ask on a $1,000,000 project, with the budget closed out with Michaela in the final days.
The partner structure held: with Roberts moving into harvest, Webb's Machinery came in alongside Rocky Mountain Equipment, and both signed letters of support are on file. Thank you for turning those around inside forty-eight hours.
We flagged the central reviewer risk back to you and built against it — the call is focused on farmer productivity and profitability, and the proposal has to close the line from optimised parts ordering and maintenance scheduling through to less equipment downtime and better farm economics. The right-to-repair angle you raised is in.
The Lucas Quiroz Alberta Innovates R&D Associate final report was filed and accepted.
The NRC IRAP Claim 14 package for July–August is submitted — status report, time records, contractor invoices and the other-government-funding workbook.
One decision came back the other way: the Alberta Innovates Product Demonstration Program application was not successful. We would rather tell you that plainly than leave it sitting on a list of pending items.
PrairiesCan confirmed to us directly that RAII expressions of interest can be filed even where a BSP application is under review. That unblocks the AI compute hardware request you asked about in September, which rides on the RAII file.
The October 8 funding scan is delivered. The headline find is the Alberta Innovation Employment Grant — 8% of Alberta R&D spend against the two-year base and 20% above it, on up to $4,000,000, claimed through AT1 Schedule 29. There is no application to write; it is claimed on the return, and nothing in the file suggests it has been claimed.
Also added: the CAAIN Prairie Agtech Validation Program (a short online form, kept clearly separate from the full proposal), an NRC IRAP AI Assist follow-on project at roughly $100,000–$500,000 through the advisor, and Mitacs AI Advantage at $10,000–$25,000 per placement with the partner paying 50% in private cash.
🔭 Outlook
One email to your accountant on the Alberta Innovation Employment Grant is the highest-return, lowest-effort item in front of you. We will frame the question.
Next — an Alberta Innovates Strategic Industries expression of interest (up to $750,000 at 50%), built off the Product Demonstration application so that work is not lost.
October 15 — the David Shackleton Alberta Innovates associate report, with Career Ready reporting mid-month.
The September NRC IRAP claim gets filed next, now that the July–August package has cleared.
October — the PrairiesCan RAII expression of interest re-submission, including the AI compute hardware request, now that the BSP blocker is removed.
We are carrying the PrairiesCan BSP route ($200,000–$5,000,000, interest-free at 50%) as a TRL 7–9 fit for Parts Automate specifically — the CAAIN scope does not qualify for it.
On the revenue-gated programs — the Regional Tariff Response Initiative, BDC LIFT and Pivot to Grow — trailing twelve-month revenue of $773,234 sits below the $1,000,000 floor. We are holding those rather than filing into a test we do not yet pass, and will revisit as revenue builds.
November–December — the Canada Summer Jobs 2027 window is expected to open.
December 31 — FY2026 year end. We want FY2026 SR&ED capture standing up before then rather than reconstructed after, including the documentation requirement on compute hardware with more than 10% commercial use.
The CanExport Innovation decision at $16,997 is still outstanding.
📝 Notes
Thanks for making room for the CAAIN review during harvest — the overnight turnaround on the draft and the partner signatures is what made the October 9 date workable.
